A Revelation to me Essay When I was a kid, I got almost anything I wanted. I had travelled to China and seen the Great Wall. I travelled to Brisbane to see the Coral Reef and I even travelled to Italy and saw places like the Coliseum and the Sistine Chapel. However, to me, Singapore was the be all and end all of the world. I had lived there for 11 years and all my wants and needs were met on that small island. I could walk anywhere without worrying about getting kidnapped. I could take a taxi and not worry about the driver cheating you. I could even leave the house 10 minutes for a lesson and not worry about being late. I had a lovely school, a nice group of international friends and moreover a house in a pristine location. All was good. One day, my dad was at work and my brother was at a sleepover. My mother took me to my favorite restaurant at that timeMcDonalds. I knew something was fishy, because I hadnt done anything good, but I went along with it. Then she brought me a FULL Meal. Hmmmmsuspicious but I again parried it off. Then she upsized it. Ok! Something was wrong. So when I went to the table to eat my Upsized, full meal of McDonalds, I asked my mum Whats going on? Whats the special occasion? And she replied, Nothing Rushad. Cant we just have a mother, son outing? I looked at her in the eye and I could tell something was wrong. Ok, fine. She said. Paused. Took a bite from her burger. Swallowed. Then said We are moving from Singapore. Dont lie. I laughed. You cant be serious! MUM! But she just shook her head, like a bothered elephant and said Im sorry. But I dont want to move. And she told me the words I will never forget: Life is like McDonalds. One day you get the Big Mac, whilst others you just get simple Chicken Nuggets. However, sometimes, you only get whats available and have no say in the matter. Do you think a chicken wants to be killed to fill your stomach? Or a cow slaughtered to fill you up? No, sometimes, you have to accept defeat and walk along the path your life has chosen. This was a turning point in my life. I realized that in life, you dont always get what you wanted. Fortunately, some people learn this in simple ways such as not winning the game you wanted, or not getting that pretty girl to go out with you. Unfortunately for me, I learnt this the hard way. Leaving all that I knew behind, to start a fresh life in Jakarta. Sometimes you only want something, like staying in Singapore, because its the safe way out. However, moving to Jakarta was a risk and a scary adventure.

Tybalt's Misinterpretation in Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is the story of two "star-crossed lovers who take their life" (prologue). Their families were ancient enemies based on an ancient grudge no longer known, but still strong. Romeo and Juliet fall passionately in love ignoring the fact they are, by household, enemies. Friar Lawrence joins them in marriage in hope "to turn their households' rancour to pure love"(p. 43). They married without their families' permission or knowledge and against their society's conventions. Neither Romeo nor Juliet could live without the other by their side and were willing to do anything to be with each other. Shakespeare believes that acting in response to knowledge without evidence or thought can lead to disaster in the end. Misfortunes occurred due to Tybalt and Mercutio's misinterpretation of Romeo's reluctance to fight. Tybalt came to pick a fight with Romeo and instead of getting what he wanted, Romeo continued to hold back because of his marriage to Juliet. Tybalt continued to push for conflict not understanding Romeo's unwillingness. Mercutio also misunderstands Romeo's reluctance to fight and decides to stand up for him by challenging Tybalt to a dual. Tybalt and Mercutio end up fighting. When Romeo stepped in between the fighting Mercutio believed that the dual had ended. And as Mercutio was taken off guard Tybalt attacked and Mercutio was killed. Romeo wanted to get Tybalt back for what he had done and make Mercutio's death of some worth. Romeo used his rage and grief to slay Tybalt. All of this had happened because of Tybalt's and Mercutio's little misinterpretation of Romeo. Both acted without thinking or waiting for a little sense of the matter or any kind of explanation. Two lives were taken as a result and one banished from his true love. Romeo's banishment from Verona resulted in Friar Lawrence's failure to form a back up plan of any kind in case Romeo would not receive the letter or learn of the plan with Juliet. Right after Friar Lawrence received news that Juliet was to be married to Paris he created a plan right on the spot. The plot involved taking a substance that would make her appear to be dead. He said that he would send a letter to Romeo

Philosophy of Fear In the pure state of nature, all humans are of equal mind and body, meaning that no one has a distinct advantage or disadvantage against another. The state of nature is also referred to as the state of war in which every man will fight and try to protect what they deem as theirs. Thomas Hobbes, a seventeenth century philosopher, described this as bellum omnium contra onmes, meaning the war of all against all. Due to everyone attempting to fight everyone else to stay alive in a pure state of nature, societies and civilizations cannot form.So is there a way to keep the peace and let mankind develop into its full potential? Hobbes uses an idea of giving up individual powers to one person or an assembly of men as in the form of sovereignty. The sovereignty will be able enforce the peace with unlimited power. The sovereignty acquires these powers as individuals give up particular freedoms. The extent of forfeited rights is to a level such as permitted by everyone in the society and the individuals must be tolerable of the sovereignty still possessing these rights.If individuals wanted to keep all of their given rights, then they would maintain rights to kill, steal, and lie. These are three severe issues when trying to form a peaceful world. If these rights are given up by individuals to sovereignty then a society can begin to form. Once the society begins to form the sovereignty will make decisions based on the best interest of the people that have joined together. For cultures to exist you need to not doubt every person’s actions and have faith that they will honor whatever contract they have agreed to.The sovereignty has a contract with the people to protect them and the people must keep the contract of giving up their rights to the sovereignty. The people also have a contract with each other to surrender the same rights to the sovereignty. Without this reliance on your fellow men, there can be no justice and therefore no morality in the society. The most important responsibility of the sovereignty is to make known the rules of the society so as the individuals understand what they may and may not do. If these laws are not in place then the society will fall back into a state of war because of the unavoidable fight over scarce resources.Hobbes’s main reason for giving up your rights to an authority is to escape the state of war. Atticus Finch from the novel To Kill a Mockingbird is a single father to Jem and Scout and a lawyer in Maycomb. He teaches his children about respect and shows it in everything he does. He not only teaches them respect, but also morality and life lessons. He’s upfront with them about how life is and the troubles in it. Because of these three reasons and many more that I haven’t mentioned, Atticus Finch is a good father. Atticus is a good father because he sets an example of respect. He teaches his kids to respect others views and beliefs. Mental Retardation is an old fashioned term for people who have problems learning and developing, but is defined as a disability characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and behaviors in expressing conceptual, social and practical skills in approximately one to three percent of the United States (Sue, Sue, Stanley, 2010). Mental retardation is categorized by the DSM-IV-TR as being a genetic disorder usually first diagnosed in infancy, childhood or adolescence, and is not considered to be a cognitive disorder. Through his piece â€Å"Enclosed. Encyclopedic. Endured: the Mall of America. † David Guterson shares his experience of the Mall of America as it opened and its effects of the American culture. From sharing statistics about the amount of jobs available, the number of parking spots, or how much cash is dispersed each week from just the ATMs; Guterson allows readers to feel the massive scale of the mall. He shares stories of the people he met and his own views on the mall, and what it says about America and its people’s values. Guterson makes it clear that Americans have become too absorbed with the thoughts of materialistic belongings; and a mall, such as the Mall of America, only makes those thoughts that much worse and destroys the people’s values. Although the points Guterson makes about the crumbling values and presently true and I agree that materialism is a horrible quality for a person to have, the mall in itself is not a bad place. It brings joy to many people and not just through ways of materialism and buying everything your heart desires, but for the sheer pleasure of entertainment. When young children go to the mall with their parents and attend Camp Snoopy or go to LEGOLAND; that is not materialistic in the slightest. All in the entire mall is not the horrible place that Guterson makes it out to be. The mall and its materialistic image have become a major highlight of American society. By allowing mall goers to share their experiences, this is fairly evident. Two women Guterson meets at a restaurant explain how they â€Å"have shopping addictions and live at the mall† (105). These women explain how they feel sorry for other malls because they are so â€Å"small and boring†, as if nothing can compare to the Mall of America. These women are right because the mall is so vast and extravagant nothing else can compare to it; and again they are right because what other malls can say that they have and indoor amusement park?! He later goes to say how the mall is not just a marketplace but rather a tourist attraction, attracting crowds from all over. The mall’s general manager, John Wheeler, is quoted saying that â€Å"I believe we can make The Mall of American stand for all of America. † The mall was said to be greater, and by 1996 was expected to have more visitors than Disneyland. This right here proves that the mall is not a bad thing; have you ever heard a person say that Disneyland corrupted them or destroyed what they believe in? No I don’t think so! So then if the mall is just as great as, or even greater than, Disney it couldn’t possibly be bad. All the more proof that the mall is not a bad place, Guterson talks to the old gentleman, Chuck Brand, who just sits at the mall, outside Camp Snoopy, every day from 10:00 am until his wife picks him up at six. â€Å"I don’t get hassled for hanging out, not shopping. Because the deal is, when you’re seventy-two, man, you’re just about all done shopping† (110). Chuck shows that the mall is so much more than just a place for people to go shopping. That you can just relax, and enjoy the atmosphere. As well, Chuck is right 72 you are pretty much done shopping, which counter acts Guterson’s point of the mall being materialistic. So with all the â€Å"old men†, like Chuck, along with all the little children that absorb themselves in the overwhelming essence of the mall there is no way that it is only a materialistic environment. The Mall of America had become as powerful as a church for some, for example on Valentine’s Day, 1993, â€Å"ninety-two couples were married en masse in a ceremony at the Mall of America† (113). Although church services were being held in the mall some were afraid that it may trivialize religion. According to Reverend Delton Krueger, President of the Mall Area Religious Council, â€Å"A good many of people in churches, feel a lot of the trouble in the world is caused by materialism† (113). I find this hard to believe, some people sure put a lot of stake into their shopping, but it’s hard to find people that would take it to the extent to think that their items and the money they spend would take over their religious views, that just seems a little to unrealistic. Krueger and Guterson are sharing the idea that people are becoming so involved in their shopping and the materialistic things that they are revering these items as form a â€Å"God†. They are forgetting the values that their parents had taught them all their life by making them go to Sunday school, and church every week; to them materialism is â€Å"GOD† they worship who have the best stuff. Still though many thought the trouble lied elsewhere, and with this people and companies around the world planned to build malls exceeding the Mall of America. All it is just a race to see who can have the most immense bizarre to satisfy the most people. As it all becomes more extreme, Americans, and the world in general, are losing all they believe in. It’s all becoming about who has the best stuff, or from the perspective of a teenage girl, who has the cutest clothes. From its vast security systems, to the indoor theme park, and over 520 stores the mall is like a city within itself; closed off from the rest of the world. Guterson writes that the quality and impressiveness of the mall is not comparable to any other. The mall is â€Å"the best of the best† and people visit it because of its modernism. The modernism of the mall is displayed through features like an arcade, the gardens, trees and flowers. The argument of the essay is reasonable in the way people go to spend in the mall. It is true that people are sometimes materialistic. But not all is bad, the mall is fun for children and adults, people of all ages. It doesn’t destroy their life long values but rather allows for sheer enjoyment. The mall is only a past time and nothing more.
